Doorstep Arts took over the YMCA in Paignton for a day of live theatre, music, activities, pizza and mocktails.
The event kicked off with Silly Squirrel – a fun family show from Above Bounds Theatre Collective. The perfect introduction to theatre for children, with audiences sitting on lovely picnic rugs. Storyteller Josephine Helen was also on site with her new show Barney the Horse – an uplifting tale about confidence building and facing your fears.
In the afternoon members of Doorstep Youth Theatre performed original work, testing out new ideas for theatre, dance and music, which they have been developing since the January lockdown. Performers Rosie Race and Petrina Fitzpatrick also joined to share their works in progress with the aid of theatre-maker Josh Lucas. In addition to the live performances, there was a pop-up seed planting shop and wellbeing area, as well as mocktails and pizza! The day ended with an open mic session run by local musician Emily Howard, she bought with her the Mobile Music Hub, fully kitted out with recording facilities & a stage for live gigs.
Mair George of Doorstep Arts said: ‘After a difficult year it’s wonderful to be back with the children and families we work with. We’re really excited to be supporting young artists making original performance work in Devon.’
Creative, welcoming, fun
Verity Soley of Doorstep Youth Theatre said: “It was so lovely to finally be surrounded by other artists and to be involved in such a creative, welcoming and fun environment which I have really missed as a result of COVID. I loved being able to share my project to a live audience and being able to discuss my ideas and process.”
Established in 2013, Doorstep Arts is a non-profit organisation committed to making theatre affordable and accessible to all. They run drama groups across Torbay at key doorstep sites – youth clubs, church halls and schools.
